Rubber mulch is dangerous to our kids

Do you know what rubber mulch is and why there is so much controversy surrounding its use?

Rubber mulch and crumb rubber filling may seem like a great idea to some people. They are made from recycled tires that have been stripped of any metal parts and come in the form of fragments that can be peppercorn-sized or as big as pine mulch. The rubber filling has been showing up at day care centers, athletic fields, schools and county parks since the late 1990s, as it doesn’t require regular maintenance and is invulnerable to flooding.

While proponents of the products say they protect kids from injuries, the debate continues because of the potential of devastating health effects to our young children who are constantly exposed to the dangerous chemicals in the rubber.
